What a fabulous group we had! Collen and I truly enjoyed our time together. While the curriculum provides a script, it is the participants that truly make these sessions a success. Your openness to share experiences and your varied backgroungs led to a wonderful exchanage of experiences- We thank you!

I promised to post some of the information discussed at our sessi0n that would be of value to you all.

We explore two questions during the personal reflections portion of the session. We looked to answer two questions: 1- How does your Board of Education define the role of the suerintendent. 2-How do you think this perception involved.

Question One Reponses; How does your BOE define the role of your superintendent?

Works at “their pleasure”

Responsible for all communication

Responsible for staff and student peformance and behavior

Responsibility for district failure

As the main change agent

Opposite “of what was” except if the new superintendent has any “passions”- he is supported

To lead the district in teaching and learning vs. a focus on physical plant and budget which was the focus of the previous superintendent

To be the district spokesperson

Honesty***

Trust***

The #1 child advocate in all area; instruction, policy, procedures***

Welcome to the NYSCOSS Professional Development Program Blog for Western New York. Our hope is that before and after participation in the Superintendent’s Professional Development Program you will have the opportunity to network, share information, opinions and become a support network for each other.

Our jobs are extremely demanding and oftentimes we may feel isolated or that “we are the only one” experiencing a particular problem. This is far from the truth. There are few issues that come up that some superintendent somewhere hasn’t experienced. NYSCOSS offers a support network and list serve that will poll superintendents on any particular topic for you. As a member of the council, all you need to do is contact the council.

This blog has the potential for a regional approach to networking. It is well understood the demographics change leadership. Perhaps, administrators in the same geographic region have similar issues/concerns and will have valuable information to share.

Neil Rochelle, Superintendent of Iroquois Central School

Dr. Colleen Taggerty, Assistant Superintendent, Erie 2 BOCES
